Our inaugural meeting was on 9th April 2014 when we welcomed Heidi Strickland-Clarke to talk to us about Health and Happiness. Since then we have been educated, fascinated, demonstrated by an array of speakers. We had the divine Ruth from Pour Mes Amis demonstrating how to make chocolate, the buzzing James educating us all about the plight of the honey bee, the WI’s very own Jean Johnson telling us about her campaign for safe working spaces for street workers, Trisha Lewis starting the centenary year with a novel look at how the 50th celebrations may have been organised and Trixxi Kixx from the House of Burlesque taking us through our paces, to name but a few highlights of our first year.
A common theme throughout the year has been fun and friendship. We have a wonderful membership, but would like to increase numbers to enable other women to join in the fun. To say a big thank you to our members and supporters we thought we would have a first birthday celebration to remember. Our fabulous committee teamed together to achieve this. Tracey our programme coordinator generously donated printed tote bags with the Tilly Widget logo for each of our members, what a fabulous way to generate interest and start a conversation about the Tilly Widgets with this over your shoulder?
Dawn found an amazing act Lucky Sweet Crumb, Lucky is a single woman who has had many dating disasters… it’s a good job she has a serious Kit Kat chunky addiction to help numb her continual heartache! She sang original and parody material covering subjects such as Facebook, online dating, cougars and fear of spiders! She brought tears of laughter when singing other relevant songs such as the giving birth song, which most of the ladies could relate to and a very different version of Beyonce’s All the Single Ladies. Whilst Lucky is not for the faint hearted our members and guests from Hart Group and, having heard who our cabaret was, a guest from Surrey Federation, all gave the evening a thumbs up.
The hall had been decorated with our usual bunting with beautifully laid tables, ladies were greeted with a glass of prosecco on arrival kindly donated for the occasion by Morrisons Farnborough. We had our usual champagne raffle which has been a real hit and fund raiser all year with the champagne themed to the session and a birthday gift raffle kindly donated by the committee including a family day out at Merrist Wood fun day from Christine our tea mistress! Thank you to everyone who made our first birthday so special. It’s been an awesome year here’s to the next one!! We hope you all enjoyed the party as much as we did.
