Moncho the Astro-physicist

We went to infinity and beyond with an astro-physicist at our February meeting as the very entertaining Moncho taught us about the planets and stars, but thankfully no difficult equations.  The full hall was enraptured as he told us how the galaxy has a billion stars and about the circle of life of a star.  ”We are made of star-stuff” as Carl Sagan said in 1973; “Our Sun is a second- or third-generation star. All of the rocky and metallic material we stand on, the iron in our blood, the calcium in our teeth, the carbon in our genes were produced billions of years ago in the interior of a red giant star.”

We learnt about the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) radio telescope array, which is powerful enough to hair growing on your head if you were on the moon.  We talked about there being less than 15% of women working in astrophysics and how this is improving but probably only to 30% today, although some of these women are in very senior positions and heading up important research facilities.   Finally we discussed exoplanets and the possibility of lie on other planets, which Moncho is 100% certain there is and he is hoping that the Gaia sateilitte will find evidence of this in 2017.

Moncho run’s a YouTube channel with his friend and colleague Hannah.  You can see the monthly episodes from this here Moncho and Hannah’s YouTube Channel and here’s ones of the video blogs to watch of Behind the Scenes
